How to watch RTL Klub abroad: live in 2026

You open RTL+ in Munich, Vienna or London and all you get is "This content is not available in your location". Sound familiar? Nothing is wrong with your device. The live stream and catch-up of RTL Klub – officially just RTL these days – are tied to a Hungarian IP address. This guide explains why, compares the three routes that exist from abroad, and shows how to set up the one that actually works in ten minutes.

Why does RTL+ refuse to play abroad?

RTL buys the broadcast rights to its programmes for the territory of Hungary. For the evening news or an in-house show this is less visible, but for a foreign series or film the contract explicitly forbids the stream from crossing the border. The platform enforces this with geoblocking: it checks where your connection comes from and, if the IP address is not Hungarian, playback is refused.

This is not a quirk of RTL+ – TV2 Play and the public broadcaster MTVA do exactly the same – but it hurts most with RTL, because RTL+ is the only Hungarian platform that streams RTL Klub live. If it will not play from abroad, there is no official plan B.

  • Free RTL+ account – a few programmes on catch-up, no live TV, and blocked abroad anyway.
  • Paid RTL+ plan – includes live TV, but also tied to a Hungarian IP. The EU portability rule only exempts temporary stays abroad, not permanent relocation. We cover this in detail in our guide to watching Hungarian TV abroad.
  • Hungarian cable or satellite subscription – bound to your Hungarian address and cannot be taken abroad.

RTL Klub or RTL? A quick clarification

Since 2022 the channel's official name is simply RTL; the "Klub" was dropped from the logo. Most viewers still search for RTL Klub, which is why we use both names. It is the same channel: the Híradó news, Fókusz, the big entertainment shows and the in-house series all air here.

RTL is also not a single channel but a whole family: RTL, RTL Kettő, RTL Három, RTL Gold, Cool, Film+ and Sorozat+. If you want to watch from abroad, pick a solution that includes more than just the flagship channel.

The three routes to RTL Klub from abroad, compared

SolutionLive RTLCatch-upMain limitation
RTL+ subscription + VPNSometimesYesNeeds Hungarian billing details; RTL+ detects and blocks most VPNs; may breach the terms of service
"Free online stream" sitesUnreliableNoPoor quality, pop-up ads, malicious scripts; links die within days
IPTV subscriptionYesYes, 7 daysNeeds a stable connection; a player has to be set up once

The VPN route is the most common first attempt, and it is where most people lose patience: RTL+ actively filters the IP ranges of VPN providers, so what works today may not work tomorrow. IPTV, by contrast, does not need a Hungarian IP address, because you are not going through the RTL+ platform at all – there is nothing to bypass, so there is nothing to break.

What you get with IPTV: the RTL family, live and on catch-up

With a Hungarian IPTV subscription, RTL is not a separate product but part of the Hungarian channel list. In practice that means:

  • Live TV on RTL, RTL Kettő, RTL Három, RTL Gold, Cool and Film+, in HD.
  • A Hungarian programme guide (EPG), so you can see when the Híradó, Fókusz or the evening show starts.
  • 7-day catch-up: if Sztárbox or Házasodna a gazda lands in the small hours because of the time difference, watch it the next day.
  • The same access to TV2, M1, Duna and M4 Sport – no separate subscription for sport.

Picture quality depends on your own connection: 10-15 Mbps of stable bandwidth is enough for HD, which any typical German, Austrian or British home plan delivers comfortably.

Setup by device, in 10 minutes

No technical skills required. Pick what you want to watch on:

  • Smart TV (Samsung, LG) – IBO Player installs directly on the TV, no box needed. Step by step: Smart TV IPTV setup.
  • Firestick or Android box – the most stable option for older TVs: Firestick and Android box setup.
  • Phone and tablet – IPTV Smarters Pro is set up in minutes, ideal for commuting or the train.
  • Android TV – TiviMate has the best programme guide and the most convenient catch-up.

Logging in takes three details (server, username, password), which you receive as soon as you request a trial. If you get stuck, we will do the setup remotely for you.

Country by country: what to watch out for

In Germany bandwidth is rarely the issue, but shared building Wi-Fi is: if RTL stutters in the evening, try a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. In Austria commuters get a bonus: the same access works in Sopron and in Vienna, with no switching (details: Hungarian TV in Austria). In the United Kingdom, since Brexit you cannot rely on EU portability even for a temporary stay, so RTL+ is officially out of reach altogether – here IPTV is practically the only working option.

In the United States and Canada the time difference is the main character: the evening news airs at lunchtime for you. That is where 7-day catch-up matters more than live TV itself. Country-specific details – providers, legal background, speed requirements – are in our Hungarian TV abroad guide.

Frequently asked questions about watching RTL Klub abroad

Can I watch RTL Klub abroad for free?

Not officially: even the free RTL+ account only works from a Hungarian IP address and does not include live TV. The "free RTL stream" links circulating online usually die within days, and many of them load malicious ads. If you want to try without risk, request a free 24-hour trial – genuinely free, no card needed.

Does RTL+ work abroad with a VPN?

Sometimes, but not reliably. RTL+ knows the IP ranges of the major VPN providers and blocks them, and the paid plan requires Hungarian billing details. Using a VPN may also breach the platform's terms of service. IPTV needs no VPN, because you are not accessing the stream through the RTL+ platform.

How much delay is there compared with the live broadcast?

IPTV live streams typically run 10-30 seconds behind terrestrial broadcast – roughly the same as the RTL+ live stream itself. For the news or a show you will not notice; for sport, mute your phone notifications so a push alert does not spoil the goal.

Can I watch the Híradó or Fókusz the next day?

Yes. Catch-up covers the last 7 days and starts with one press from the programme guide. With a large time difference – in the United States, for example – this feature matters more than live TV itself. TiviMate offers the most convenient catch-up experience.

Are RTL Kettő, Cool and Film+ included?

Yes, the entire RTL family is part of the Hungarian channel list: RTL, RTL Kettő, RTL Három, RTL Gold, Cool, Film+ and Sorozat+. No separate package is needed, and our FAQ covers the full channel line-up.

Which device is the easiest to start with?

If you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV, go straight to the TV with IBO Player – nothing to buy. For an older TV, a Firestick is the cheapest and most stable route. On the go, IPTV Smarters Pro on your phone is set up in minutes. Each device has its own screen-by-screen walkthrough in our guides.
