Firestick and Android box IPTV setup
If your TV isn't smart enough, or you simply want a better player than the Smart TV apps offer, a Firestick or an Android TV box is the answer. But there is a trap in 2026 that most guides stay silent about: the newest Fire TV Stick models can no longer install the best players at all. Here is what to buy and how to set it up.
Warning: not every Fire TV Stick will work
This is the most important paragraph in the guide. Amazon's newer budget devices — the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the refreshed Fire TV Stick HD — no longer run Fire OS but Amazon's own Linux-based Vega OS.
On those, Amazon has completely disabled installing from unknown sources. There is no workaround: only what is in the Amazon Appstore will run — and TiviMate is not there.
If you are buying now, look for a model that still runs Fire OS. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the safe choice. Check the operating system in the product description before you order.
Firestick or Android box — which one?
| Criterion | Fire TV Stick | Android TV box |
|---|---|---|
| Installing players | Sideload required (Downloader) | Straight from Google Play |
| TiviMate available | Only by sideload, on Fire OS | Yes, one click |
| Price | Lower | Slightly higher |
| Storage | Typically 8 GB, fills fast | 16-64 GB |
| Works on an old TV | Yes (HDMI) | Yes (HDMI) |
| Recommended for beginners | If you already own one | Yes |
In short: if you don't own a device yet, an Android TV box is more convenient because there is no sideloading to deal with. If you already have a Firestick running Fire OS, there is no reason to buy anything new.
Android TV box: the simplest route
There is no trick on a box. Three steps:
- Open the Google Play Store on the box home screen.
- Search for TiviMate and install it.
- Launch it and enter your access details — our TiviMate guide covers it screen by screen.
If you would rather use IBO Player or IPTV Smarters Pro, both are also on the Play Store; their setup is covered in our IBO Player and IPTV Smarters Pro guides.
Firestick: installing with the Downloader app
On a Firestick running Fire OS, the player has to be installed with the Downloader app. This is Amazon's built-in developer feature, not a hack — it does not void your warranty.
- From the home screen, find and install the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore (the developer is AFTVnews).
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options. If you don't see it, open About and click the device name seven times — that reveals the developer menu.
- Open Install unknown apps and enable it for Downloader.
- Open Downloader and enter the player's official download address. If you are not sure what it is, ask us and we'll send it.
- When the download finishes, Downloader offers to install. Accept, then delete the downloaded file afterwards.
- Switch the unknown sources option back off. It is safer that way and can be re-enabled any time.
The four most common mistakes
- You bought a Vega OS device. Nothing is wrong with your setup — it is simply not possible on that model. You need a Fire OS one.
- You didn't enable Downloader specifically. Permission is granted per app in the developer menu, not once globally.
- Storage is full. An 8 GB Firestick fills up fast and starts stuttering. Clear the cache in settings.
- Wi-Fi behind the HDMI port. A stick tucked behind the TV gets weaker reception. Use the HDMI extender — one comes in the box.
If your TV is from 2016 or later, there's an easier route
Don't buy hardware you don't need. If your TV is a Samsung or LG from 2016 or newer, there are apps that install directly on the set, with no box at all. We cover the procedure in the Smart TV IPTV setup guide.
A box does buy you better players in return: TiviMate offers faster zapping and a far better programme guide than any Smart TV app. We break down the difference in the player comparison.
Frequently asked questions about Firesticks and boxes
Which Fire TV Stick should I buy in 2026?
One that still runs Fire OS, not Vega OS. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the safe choice. On the newer budget models (4K Select and the refreshed HD), Amazon has completely disabled installing apps from unknown sources — TiviMate cannot be installed on them by any method.
Why isn't TiviMate in the Amazon Appstore?
Because the developer never published it there — which is why you need the Downloader app to sideload it. On an Android TV box it simply downloads from the Google Play Store, one of the main reasons a box is easier for most people. Setup is covered in our TiviMate guide.
Is installing from unknown sources safe?
The feature itself is Amazon's built-in developer option, not a hack, and it does not void your warranty. The risk lies in where you download from: only install from the developer's official source, and switch the option back off once you are done.
How much storage does a Firestick need?
The 8 GB base model fills up quickly. A player and a few apps fit, but clear the cache regularly — full storage is one of the most common causes of stuttering that people blame on the service. More on that in our troubleshooting guide.
Can I use an Android TV box on an old, non-smart TV?
Yes, and that is one of its biggest advantages: all you need is a free HDMI port. The box provides its own interface and the TV acts purely as a display. This is also the answer for pre-2016 sets, where Smart TV apps can no longer be installed.
What is the difference between an Android TV box and Google TV?
Google TV is the newer interface on top of Android TV; the underlying system is the same. For IPTV there is no practical difference: both give you the Google Play Store and the same players.
